Behind The Image | The Image Behind

ARTEFACTFESTIVAL

An exhibition, performances and concerts by artists with different backgrounds meet at the Artefact festival for media art.
Behind the Image | The Image behind (on covering and uncovering media) presents work that investigates what’s hidden or invisible behind images. The technological and ideological/political dimensions are often strongly connected. A medium or technology can both cover and reveal by using the very same mechanisms, but images inevitably show and hide at the same time.
In the STUK pavilion space special attention is paid to transitional texts and images, mutating codes and messages or images hidden in other images.
We often feel the urge to modify somebody else’s images, place them in a different context. We interpret or reinterpret, manipulate or destroy them.
An image, as such, is never finished or absolute. It is always changing…

Melik Ohanian’s video installation, Hidden consists of two images: one visible, and a hidden second invisible image encoded within the picture. The second image has been encrypted into the work using a process called steganography — a method used to encode hidden information inside an image. According to the FBI, the plotters of the 9/11 attacks used this system to transmit information via the Internet. In Ohanian’s work, the second image cannot be revealed without the use of decoding software, and therefore can only be imagined by the viewer. Hidden resonates with notions of territory, and the politics of control, defense, and attack.
Ohanian has received international acclaim for works in a broad range of media that address issues of personal autonomy and identity, access to territory and information, as well as conceptions of time in today’s global culture.Artists : a.o.
