Sound Design For Future Films

Wexner Center For The Arts Colombus  •  United States of America [US]

Sound Design for Future Films inverts the hierarchy and workflow of typical film production, starting with a two-and-a-half minute sound design for a scene in a film that doesn’t exist. We began with the narrative aural details necessary to construct a scene, sounds that describe activities within an environment, sounds that are not dialogue or music. These sounds are drawn from sound libraries and are composed to propose an oblique-narrative.
The sound design serves as the primary source material in a collaboration with other artists. We gave this scene to 20 different artists to create the image component. Each artist was given complete control concerning their visual contribution, we have only asked that the audio remain unaltered.
‘Sound Design for Future Films’ began in 2006, and is an ongoing platform for collaboration. New artists will be added to each edition. The third edition debuted in 2010.
